FPL has a program called “On Call” that provides you a monthly credit on your electric bill. All you have to do is allow FPL to install a small device on your water heater and air conditioner compressor that allows them to borrow electricity for 15 minutes when they are in peak demand times. (You can earn larger rebates if you allow them to borrow for 3 hours, but that’s a lot of A/C to give up in the summer). It’s a win-win situation because you get a small rebate for giving up very little, if anything, and FPL is able to borrow electricity instead of having to produce more in peak demand periods. Check out the sign up page on FPL’s website.

FPL On Call program – lend your electricity for a monthly rebate
Posted in Environment

We have this set up in our unit. We get a discount on our bill each month, but it has never been used in the 2 years it has been in place (not that we have detected). And we are signed up for the “up to 3 hour” program. Given the fact that it doesn’t seem to be used very often, I think someone could sign up for the 3 hour program without much concern.
